as one of the best movies of the year, the irishman is the anti-captain america. it's as stark and morally gray as they come, and though it's at its best when dealing with organized crime and its various associated vermin, it's at its worst when portraying a protagonist. the cap storms into ultra hd with a strong 4k presentation and a slightly better dolby atmos soundtrack, but the same set of supplements as before. still, the overall package is recommended for hardened mcu loyalists and uhd collectors.

the film tells the story of the events that occur in the wwii era, a time of impending conflict, and how these events are tempered by the ideals of a young captain. steve is a supremely talented physical specimen who also happens to be a type of naive nincompoop, and the love interest here is peggy carter (hayley atwell), a sweetheart with a devilish streak and an indelible smile. there's good ol' wwii versus wwii, and the cap finally gets to flex his strength in a sequence that has become a favorite of comic book fans (and as always, a captain america fan will get to relish in the epic battle sequences between the cap and red skull). the movie is just pure fun and very much all about the go in the action sequences, and while the story doesn't get particularly deep, it is charming as all hell. the blu-ray presentation is significantly improved in terms of quality as there's more clarity in the 4k picture and it looks sharp and colorful, with a nicely-textured image. the avc encode is fine, but it can't exactly hold a candle to the dcp and it's a little soft and shows some blockiness and speckling, especially when the action gets a little bit involved.
