The staff, led by psychiatrist Dr. John Cawley, appear uncooperative. The marshals learn that Solando's doctor Lester Sheehan left the island on vacation immediately after Solando disappeared. Teddy experiences migraine headaches, flashbacks of his experiences as a U.S. Army soldier during the liberation of Dachau and also vivid dreams of his wife Dolores, who was killed in a fire set by arsonist Andrew Laeddis. Teddy explains to Chuck that he took the case to find Laeddis, believing he is on the island. Solando suddenly resurfaces, prompting Teddy to break into a restricted ward where he meets patient George Noyce. He claims the doctors are experimenting on patients, some of whom are taken to a lighthouse to be lobotomized, and warns Teddy that everyone is deceiving him.

Teddy regroups with Chuck and they climb the cliffs toward the lighthouse but become separated. Seeing Chuck's body on the rocks below, Teddy investigates but finds only a cave where a woman claiming to be the real Solando is hiding. She states that she is a former psychiatrist who discovered experiments to develop mind control but was forcibly committed. She says that Cawley and his assistant Dr. Naehring will use Teddy's war trauma to feign a psychotic break, allowing them to have him committed. Teddy returns to the hospital and is greeted by Cawley. When Teddy asks about Chuck's whereabouts, Cawley firmly insists that Teddy does not have a partner, that he arrived on the island alone.

Awakening later, Andrew calmly recounts the truth, satisfying the doctors. Cawley notes that they had achieved this state nine months before, but Andrew quickly regressed. He warns this will be Andrew's last chance and if he lapses again he will be lobotomized. Some time later, Andrew relaxes on the hospital grounds with Sheehan. Appearing delusional, Andrew again refers to Sheehan as "Chuck" and says they must leave the island. Sheehan signals to Cawley, who orders that Andrew be lobotomized. Andrew then asks Sheehan if it would be worse "to live as a monster, or to die as a good man?" A stunned Sheehan calls Andrew "Teddy" but the latter does not respond and leaves peacefully with the orderlies.

Shutter Island was mainly filmed in Massachusetts, with Taunton being the location for the World War II flashback scenes.[8] Old industrial buildings in Taunton's Whittenton Mills Complex replicated the Dachau concentration camp.[9] The old Medfield State Hospital in Medfield, Massachusetts, was another key location. Cawley's office scenes were the second floor of the chapel during the late evening. Lights were shone through the windows to make it look like it was daytime. The crew painted the hospital's brick walls to look like plywood. This served the dual purpose of acting as scenery and blocking the set from view of a local road. The crew wanted to film at the old Worcester State Hospital, but demolition of surrounding buildings made it impossible. The stone lodge, next to Leach Pond, at Borderland State Park in Easton, Massachusetts, was used for the cabin scene.[10] The film used Peddocks Island as a setting for the story's island. East Point, in Nahant, Massachusetts, was the location for the lighthouse scenes.[11] The scenes where Teddy and Chuck are caught in the hurricane were filmed at the Wilson Mountain Reservation in Dedham, Massachusetts.[12] Filming ended on July 2, 2008.[13]

In its own way it's a haunted house movie, or make that a haunted castle or fortress. Shutter Island, we're told, is a remote and craggy island off Boston, where a Civil War-era fort has been adapted as a prison for the criminally insane. We approach it by boat through lowering skies, and the feeling is something like the approach to King Kong's island: Looming in gloom from the sea, it fills the visitor with dread. To this island travel U.S. marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo).

It's 1954, and they are assigned to investigate the disappearance of a child murderer (Emily Mortimer). There seems to be no way to leave the island alive. The disappearance of one prisoner might not require the presence of two marshals unfamiliar with the situation, but we never ask that question. Not after the ominous walls of the prison arise. Not after the visitors are shown into the office of the prison medical director, Dr. Cawley, played by Ben Kingsley with that forbidding charm he has mastered.

I was really disappointed in the ending. I thought Teddy was sane, and they were keeping him there because he did find out that they were experimenting on the patients (which they did do in insane asylum's in the 1950's and before). I was hoping that the US Marshalls would storm the island, save Teddy and find out about the experimentation! I was way off on this one!

There's plenty of twisty fun to be had in Shutter Island, especially when the audience is invited to play along with Teddy to solve the mystery of Rachel's disappearance. The performances are all solid, especially DiCaprio and Ben Kingsley as the secretive psychiatrist John Cawley, but the real star of the film is the environment. Between the isolated, rain-pummeled island and Ashecliffe's many dark prison cells and long, silent corridors, the film is practically dripping with atmosphere. Scorsese's choice of low lighting invites deep shadows that contribute to the picture as well as the claustrophobic feel and gloomy mood that permeates the film. The pace does tend to drag over its 2+ hour runtime, but it's a solid psychological thriller that makes it feel like time well spent.

At first, all appears to be going well with Andrew's progress...but it's not long before he begins to regress. He begins to talk about his need to leave the island, hinting that he is once again retreating further into his mind and the "Teddy" persona. And just as Cawley warned, this really was Andrew's last chance. A disappointed Cawley consults with Ashecliffe's warden, and Andrew is taken away by the facility's orderlies for lobotomization to permanently put an end to the vicious cycle of guilt and delusions that plague him.

As a result, Elrod's name now turns up in the Internet Movie Database, a popular website for information about films, directors and performers. Typing her name in the site's search box yields this result: "Shutter Island (2010)...Female Patient."

The deeper and deeper the marshals get into the goings on at the hospital, it becomes clear that Daniels is personally invested in this case and has a history with certain people on the island. The closer Daniels gets to some answers, the more reckless he becomes, and the more reckless he becomes, the tighter a grip the island seems to have on him. The plot will take you on many twists and turns, as the true characters of Teddy Daniels, Ashecliffe hospital, and Shutter Island become clearer, yet more twisted at the same time.

When U.S. Marshall Teddy Daniels arrives at the asylum for the criminally insane on Shutter Island, what starts as a routine investigation quickly takes a sinister turn. As the investigation unfolds and Daniels uncovers more shocking and terrifying truths about the island, he also learns there are some places that never let you go.

Later on, Rachel Solando is found safe and sound and returned to the prison. However, due to the storm, the detectives are still trapped on the island. However, Teddy gradually becomes suspicious of everything and believes many conspiracies are occurring on Shutter Island. Whilst searching for his partner Chuck, who he believes has fallen to his death, he finds a woman claiming to be the real Rachel Solando in a cave on the edge of the island, who confirms the doctors are experimenting on patients with psychotropic medication and trans-orbital lobotomies in an attempt to develop mind control techniques.

The film starts with U.S. Marshal Edward "Teddy" Daniels (DiCaprio) and his partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) arriving at the titular island in 1954, where they are to investigate the disappearance of a patient from Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally insane. The patient in question is Rachel Solando, who was sectioned for drowning her three children, with the only clue to her disappearance a cryptic note found in her room reading: "The law of 4; who is 67?".

Teddy soon starts to experience migraine headaches, which trigger visions of traumatic incidents from his past - specifically his involvement in the liberation of Dachau in World War Two, and visions of his wife Dolores Chanal who died in a fire caused by arsonist Andrew Laeddis. During one of these visions, Dolores explains that Solando is still on the island - as is Laeddis, with Teddy later telling Chuck that he took the case in an attempt to locate his wife's killer.

After reports that Solando has apparently returned, Teddy breaks into Ward C where he encounters George Noyce (Jackie Earle Henley), a patient in solitary confinement who claims that patients are being lobotomised in the lighthouse - and that everyone on the island is conspiring against Teddy in an elaborate game.

Reunited with Chuck, Teddy heads towards the lighthouse, only to lose his partner near the cliffs and seemingly spot his body on the rocks. Teddy heads towards Chuck's corpse - revealed to just be an optical illusion - but discovers a cave inhabited by a woman (Patricia Clarkson) who claims to be the real Rachel Solando. She claims that she discovered experiments with psychotropic medicines on the island in an attempt to perfect mind control, and was forcibly committed to the island before she could go to the authorities.

Teddy returns to the hospital in search of Chuck - but Dr. Cawley insists that Chuck does not exist and that Teddy arrived on the island alone. A now paranoid Teddy sets fire to Cawley's car and uses the diversion to flee to the lighthouse as his hallucinations worsen.

Cawley explains that Teddy is in fact Andrew Laeddis, the most dangerous patient in Ward C. Teddy/Andrew was incarcerated on the island after he murdered his manic depressive wife Dolores, who drowned their three children. Edward Daniels and Rachel Solando are revealed to be anagrams of Andrew Laeddis and Dolores Chanal, and Andrew attacked George Noyce two weeks ago for calling him Laeddis. 041b061a72
